Hello and welcome! My name is Emma and I've been a bookseller for over a decade. I also write fantasy under the name E. M. Epps. This blog features my Two-Paragraph Book Reviews. One paragraph from me. One from the book. Here's why I keep it short.

Review: “Boneshaker” by Cherie Priest

Thumbs down for Boneshaker by Cherie Priest. Science fiction.

This book had so much going for it. First of all: steamtech, zombies, Victorian Seattle? All kinds of awesome. Secondly, I have friends who liked it (one of whom was kind enough to lend me her copy, so I hope she’ll forgive me for giving it thumbs down). Lastly, I saw Cherie Priest speak at Steamcon and she was a hoot. When the zombie apocalypse comes, I want her on my side. But, sadly – it won’t be due to her writing. The two main characters were bland, and since the plot was an extremely simple character-driven quest, I found it, how shall I put this, boring. Replete with awkward lines and failing to make good on its creative promises, it read like a first novel. Unfortunately…it was her seventh. This is one of those times when I have to scratch my head over popular opinion. There’s so much great science fiction out there. Why the foofaraw over this?

“Of course I do. This ship over here is mine. You see her? The Free Crow, we call her, and she is a little bit stolen, a little bit bought, and a great bit made…but oh, she can fly.”
