While bored at work I read this book’s 62 pages of content (the remainder are bird lists). A very useful beginning. The lists however have been superseded by a 99c app on my phone. Ah well.
How does a beginner start to identify birds? Typically, the birds he sees are moving so fast through the foliage or across the sky that he seldom gets a good view. When a bird does pause for a second, the beginner often is frustrated in attempting to compare what he sees before him to the drawings in the field guide. His guide might have several hundred illustrations of different birds, species descriptions, family descriptions, notes on habitat, ranges, maps, etc. He starts flipping frantically through his book, looking at the bird, looking at the pages. His bird disappears, a new one comes into view, the page flipping begins again. He saw something like that in his book before but now he can’t find it. He can’t focus his binoculars. The bird keeps moving. He thinks he has it. One more look. The bird disappears. Ahhhhh…..
