Hello and welcome! My name is Emma and I've been a bookseller for over a decade. I also write fantasy under the name E. M. Epps. This blog features my Two-Paragraph Book Reviews. One paragraph from me. One from the book. Here's why I keep it short.

Review: “Insurgent” by Veronica Roth

Thumbs up for Insurgent by Veronica Roth. Young adult science fiction.

Yikes. Even more intense than the first in the series, Divergent, which frankly was pretty dang intense. Things just keep getting worse and worse in Tris’s world. This is a very violent book packed with action, but not mindless action – Tris is a three-dimensional character who thinks as well as fights, and that’s a good thing because she’s up against some bad shit. Insurgent also deals extensively with the emotional aftereffects that Tris’s choices have on her psyche, which I thought was a tough balancing act that Roth pulled off really well. Exciting as hell. Oh God, you mean I have to wait until next year for the third book? NOOOO!

By the time the fight dies down, my clothes are more paint-colored than black. I decide to keep the shirt to remind me why I chose Dauntless in the first place: not because they are perfect, but because they are alive. Because they are free.
