Hello and welcome! My name is Emma and I've been a bookseller for over a decade. I also write fantasy under the name E. M. Epps. This blog features my Two-Paragraph Book Reviews. One paragraph from me. One from the book. Here's why I keep it short.

Review: “The Phoenix Code” by Catherine Asaro

Neither thumbs up nor thumbs down for The Phoenix Code by Catherine Asaro. Science fiction/romance.

Catherine Asaro is one of my favorite writers, but that said, I cannot recommend this book. While I enjoy her style enough that I never wanted to actually put it down, the beginning was very slow, and after the plot picked up, there were far, far too many times that I thought to myself: “Oh, no way.” The ending is especially unbelievable. Avoid this book, but definitely read the addictive Skolian Empire saga, starting with Primary Inversion or (if you want more romance and less science) The Veiled Web.

“He stroked her temple, a soft brush of sensation. ‘Do you know, your eyes are the same color blue as the alternate function key on my calculator?'”
