I love quotes. Knowing a handful of good quotes can be like having a set of brass knuckles in your pocket; nothing stops an argumentative shmo in their tracks faster than a pithy zinger from Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr on taxation or Jefferson on religion. Will you forgive me if I quote myself – from an unpublished novel?
Having a stock of quotations at her disposal guaranteed that she would have at least one ally in any point of opinion; and they were the best sort of allies, too, for it is very difficult to work up a good argument with someone who has the three advantages of being genius, famous, and dead.
As well as half a shelf of quote books, I have a gigantic file on my computer of quotes accumulated from, well, everywhere – posters, cards, books, websites, people’s sig files. It seems rather a shame not to share them, so when I recently got a yen to do some simple computer art, that’s what I thought of. I’ve done something similar before – I have (which I recently found, and need to re-find) a bookmarker I’m rather proud of, with quotes on science. The original file is long gone, a now-unreadable MS Publisher doc on a defunct laptop, but the finished product turned out so nicely I think it’s worth redoing. When it pops up again.
