Thumbs up for A Severed Head by Irish Murdoch. Literature.
A short, darkly funny novel about a weak man who’s cheating on his wife—then discovers said wife wants to leave him for her psychoanalyst who is his own best friend. There are more people involved, in a farcical chain of partner-swapping madness, but anything past that is spoilers. These are awful people and I could hear Murdoch cackling as she wrote their dialogue. Highly recommended, as long as you don’t go into literature looking for people you’d want to meet in real life.
‘You’re very philosophical about it,’ said Rosemary. ‘But don’t overdo it. You must be miserable and bitter somewhere in your soul. A bit of good cursing may be just what you need.’
