Thumbs up for Forged by Blood by Ehigbor Okosun. Young adult fantasy.
A better-than-average YA fantasy with a powerful heroine and a wonderful, detailed West Africa-inspired setting. Unfortunately, it was sold as an adult book. This matters, because it sets reader expectations. Forged by Blood, while very well-written, is a fast-paced, first-person present-tense adventure coming-of-age story complete with love triangle: in other words, it hits all the YA notes. (Why was it sold as an adult book? I guess I can see that a few scenes might make a publisher nervous, but just put in a content warning, you guys!) I do recommend it—if you like YA fantasy and set your expectations in that direction.
I struggle with the words, trying to fashion pretty bows, but they still come out as spikes, barbed darts dripping with poison. “Second chances are luxuries. In our world, people don’t change, and you can’t give or take second chances like presents.”
